The Shaw's Employees Federal Credit Union was originally chartered as the George C. Shaw Co. Federal Credit Union in January of 1936. The original field of membership consisted of "those employees of the George C. Shaw Co. in Portland, ME". At the time Shaw's only had two stores in Portland. Shaw's has now grown to 200 stores throughout New England. As Shaw's Supermarkets has grown so has the credit union, while remaining strictly a single employer sponsored Credit Union.

As of December, 2006 the Credit Union had over 3,400 members located throughout New England. The Board of Directors is made up of Shaw's Supermarkets associates who, combined, have over 150 years of service with the company. The majority of the current Directors have been on the Board for over 10 years each. The current President of the Board of Directors is Edward McGeehan, who has been involved with the Credit Union since the early 1980’s, starting out on the Credit Committee, then moving to the Supervisory Committee, and finally to the Board of Directors in February, 1983. Ed has served as President of the Board since March, 1987.
